NDM News: Marxism, Pluralism and Hegemony

1) Research the Ian Tomlinson case.

What would the traditional, hegemonic view of the police be in a case like this?
The traditional hegemonic view of the police in a case like this would be that they are doing their job; their duty is to control the street. The news will have positively display and portray the police due to the pressures from the government.

How did new and digital media create a different story?
It provides a different element to the story as the news story would not be covered up by the influence of the police.

What does the police officer's subsequent acquittal suggest about the power of new and digital media?
It suggests that the developments of new and digital gives the general public a chance to expose the corrupted police officers. The police would essentially escape without punishments but the new and digital media and the rise of citizen journalism has allowed more evidence in depth.

2) What does the author argue regarding whether hegemony is being challenged by Web 2.0?
This requires web-based software, such as blogs, which audiences can use to produce, and share, their own work. It is argued that Web 2.0, often referred to as ‘we media’, democratises the media, as anyone with a web connection can create and publish texts (‘user-generated content)

3) In your opinion, does new and digital media reinforce dominant hegemonic views or give the audience a platform to challenge them?

In my opinion, the new and digital media does allow people to voice out their opinions through the use of social media platforms such as Twitter where it is all about UGC. They feel as if they are part of the media industry. However, the news that they post or voice out would be censored by the news institutions and they decide what to put on to spread awareness to the general public.

4) Do recent world events such as Brexit or Donald Trump's election in the US suggest dominant hegemonic ideologies are being challenged or reinforced? There are arguments for both sides here - explain your opinion and why.
Both campaigns used hegemonic ideologies to strengthen their position in the election runs. Whether it is leaving Europe or winning the presidential election, they used hegemonic ideals to enhance their position and inevitable win. So I think it reinforces hegemonic ideologies.
