NDM: The effect of online technology on newspapers

1) Do you agree with James Murdoch that the BBC should not be allowed to provide free news online? Why?
I disagree with James Murdoch on BBC not being allowed to provide free news online. We as a society already have the new digital media to access many news sources online for free. The new digital media consist of many social media platforms and websites that we can access and consume news for free. I think BBC should continue to provide free news online because consequently, if they do, they will lose customers because there are many other sources that we can access.

2) Read this blog on the Times paywall three years on (note this is the UK Times - not the New York Times!)

3) Was Rupert Murdoch right to put his news content (The Times, The Sunday Times) behind a paywall?

I think Rupert Murdoch was right to put his news content like The Times and The Sunday times behind a paywall because they had been suffering heavily due to the development of the new digital media that allows the users to access news for free. By creating a paywall system, hopefully, the news content are able to encourage the consumers to pay for the content.

4) Choose two comments from below the Times paywall article - one that argues in favour of the paywall and one that argues against. Copy a quote from each and explain which YOU agree with and why.

"In any business, success depends on delivering one of three things to customers: lowest cost, differential quality, or a niche unavailable elsewhere. Newsprint is no exception, but the lowest cost product in the marketplace is set at zero." - I agree with this statement as I believe that socially, newspapers hold no value. If they were to deliver these three things, they would increase their value.

5) Read this article from the Media Briefing on the continuing decline of the newspaper industry

6) Why do you think the Evening Standard has bucked the trend and increased circulation and profit in the last two years?

The Evening Standard has bucked the trend and increased circultation and profit due to the fact that they follow a certain business model. They give out freesheets and rely on adverts to gain revenue. This is effective as people are receiving content for free and is distributed around London.

7) Is there any hope for the newspaper industry or will it eventually die out? Provide a detailed response to this question explaining and justifying your opinion.

In my opinion, I think that the newspaper industry could die out due to the development of the new technology and the new digital media. But newspapers could follow a business model of free sheets to keep on functioning.
