NDM case study: How has news changed?

1) Read this Ofcom 2016 report on the consumption of news in the UK. Note down the key statistics and changes that Ofcom document.

  • TV is used for news mostly nowadays which the adults dominate it with the percentage of 89% of the adults using the TV to consume news and stories. 
  • Half of 16-24s demographic say they use TV for news compared to nine in ten of those aged 65+. 
  • The ABC1 socio-economic group are more likely to use newspapers, TV and the internet for news than the C2DEs. 
  • One in twenty (6%) use all four media platforms for news. One in 5 (19%) uses only TV for news. 
  • Three in ten (29%) now use a mobile for news. 
  • 33% of the adults in the UK have stated that they use radio to consume news stories which this statistic has remained constant over recent years. 
  • 77% say that they use BBC radio station for news, 42% use any commercial radio station for news, 26% use each of BBC radio 4 and BBC radio 2 while 16% state they use BBC Radio 1 and 10% use Heart to access news. 
  • 55% of those who use radio for news only use BBC radio for this purpose, compared to 26% that only use commercial radio. 
  • The circulation of newspapers have decreased from 2010 to 2016. In 2010, it has decreased from 2010 to 6 million in 2016. 
  • 29% people that stated they use newspapers for news, with the most used titles which are: Daily Mail (26%), The sun (22%), The Daily Mirror (11%) followed by the 9% using each of Metro, The Times and The Guardian. 
  • In 2015, 41% said to have used the internet for news but this has increased in 2016 as it has raised to 48%. 
  • The 16-24 year olds are more likely to use more of the internet to access news than the 65+ who are more likely to use the radio to listen to the news. The percentage to use the internet for 16-24s is 63% which for 65+ is 18%. This is due to the fact that it is two different age demographics that grew up using two different technologies. 
  • Only 6% use all 4 platforms which are TV, Internet, Radio and Newspapers. 
  • 47% of those that use social media platforms to access news say they mostly consume it through social media posts, compared tro 30% in 2015. 
  • 58% of radio news users only use one radio source for news; 40% of TV news users only use one source, 38% of the internet users only use one source and 31% of newspaper users use it for news only. 


2) What are the most popular platforms for audiences to access news and how has this changed in recent years?
  • Nearly half (48%) of adults say they use the internet for news nowadays, an increase from 41% in 2015.
  • Overall, 47% of those who use social media for news say they mostly get news stories through social media posts, compared to 30% in 2015.
  • When looking at the type of news people say they get from social media posts, breaking news (60%) is the most popular type, followed by UK news (49%), local news (48%), headlines (45%) foreign or international news (33%) and celebrity news (33%).

3) How do different age demographics access news in the UK?
Different age demographics tend to use different ways in the UK to access news. 

With the younger generation from perhaps 16 to 35, they perhaps tend to use the internet more to access the news in the UK due to no cost, it is faster and it tends to has more information's including videos and pictures. 

Then from middle 30s to middle 40s, perhaps that age demographic tend to use a mixture of the internet and the TV especially to access news in the UK. 

Now onto the elderly people from perhaps age 65 and onwards, they will tend to use more of the radio and the TV to access the news. 

4) What percentage of 16-24 year olds use the internet to access their news?
The percentage was 63% which meant that most of the people between 16-24 years of age tend to user the internet to access the news. 

5) Does socio-economic status change attitudes to news? If so, how?
Well I think it does. The ABC1 socio-economic group are bound to use 3 platforms such as Newspapers, radio and Internet for their news consumption. The fact that the internet is evolving and the occurence of new digital media has attracted more people to use the internet for access to news. It is due to the fact that the internet is constantly updated with Google's search engines being very efficient.

7) How has news consumption through television changed in recent years?
The news consumption through television has changed in recent years due to the reason being that the technology has improved majorly and is still improving quickly. The new digital media is slowly replacing Television in terms of news consumption as people tend to use the internet for their daily news intake. The internet has Google which allows people to search up any recent stories and news. 

8) How much has newspaper circulation declined since 2010? Why do you think this is?
The circulation of newspapers since 2010 has decreased majorly. In 2010, there was newspaper circulation of 9.2 million and till 2016, it has decreased to 6 million which is a huge difference. The cause of this is certainly the occurence of new digital media as it's free and gives more information. 

9) Which are the most popular newspapers and websites in the UK? What do you know about those newspapers' political viewpoints?
The most popular newspapers in the UK is first "Daily Mail". 26% of people that use newspapers for news use Daily Mail for news consumption. The second most popular newspaper is "The Sun" with 22% of the people state they use it. The political viewpoints of Daily Mail is rather right wing. 

10) How does online news consumption differ for age, gender and socio-economic status?
Broadcaster websites/apps are used by
  • 23% of all adults for news, 
  • 20% use social media sites, 
  • 17% use search engines 
  • 15% use newspaper sites/apps. 
  • You can see that adults between the ages of 16-24 consume media digitally however most of which come from the ABC1 social class.

11) What percentage of people use social media to access news? How does this differ by age and socio-economic status?
The majority of the people that use the social media platform to access news are mostly female adults with the percentage of 78%. 

The age demographic of 16-24 year olds tend to use the internet more than the 65+ people. 

12) What percentage of users only use social media sites for their news?
94% of the users say they use social media only for news consumption which is very normal in this day and age. 

13) What are the most popular online sites for news?
The most popular online sites for news are BBC, Sky News and Yahoo News. 

14) What percentage of 16-24 year olds access news mostly from social media?
The percentage of 16-24 year old's accessing news mostly on social media platforms are very high in comparison to the elderly people using social media to access news. 

16-24 year old's are most likely to use Facebook which is a social media platform to access news in comparison to the 64+ with the percentage of 31% for the 16-24 year olds and 1% for the elderly people to use Facebook to access news. 

15) How do audiences find stories online? Do you follow links or go to the homepage of the news provider?
Many of the users of the internet tend to find stories and news on social media platforms. Social Media platforms such as Snapchat in the new digital media also report news as they want the nation to know what is happening. 

The older generation tend to use Google to go on sites like The Guardian, BBC or The Independant for news consumption. 
New/digital media: audience and institution


16) What are the benefits for audiences from the changes new and digital media have had on the news industry?
There are many benefits for the audiences from the changes new and digital media have had on the news industry. 

The changes in the new digital media has allowed the audiences to navigate their way own to find their news easily and successfully. 

The audiences can be benefited by data mining as the browser then recommends them videos and sources that link to what they mainly search for or consume. 

Many websites that allow the audiences to gain more knowledge and information which would benefit them as they know more. 

Some people can choose to turn on notifications which notifies the audience whenever there is a breaking news. 

Consume videos which focus on the news and stories allowing the audiences to gain more 
knowledge.  

News and stories are instantaneous. 

17) What are the benefits for institutions from the changes new and digital media have had on the news industry?
The new digital media also benefits the institutions within the news industry.

They are able to advertise which benefits them as they gain revenue.

User generated content allows the institutions to see any feedbacks they can focus on to make their content more suitable for the audiences.

Some websites require donations like The Guardian which they can gain donation.

Reaches a wide range of audience. 

18) What are the downsides for audiences as a result of new and digital media in news?
In the new digital media, there are many news sources produced by institutions which clarify recent stories and news. However, many of the sources do tell fake news and are biased which many of people do believe meaning that many people are being lied to and told fake stories. 

19) What are the downsides for institutions as a result of new and digital media in news?
There are many downsides for institutions within the news industry due to the new and digital media as: 


  • The circulation of newspapers are gradually decreasing. 
  • They need donations to maintain websites. 
  • They have to function 24/7.
  • Some social media platforms like Snapchat now also report news where most of the youth generation consume their news from. 
  • More opinions from the consumers who perhaps disagree with the media 

20) Who has benefited most from the changes new and digital media have had on the news industry - audiences or institutions?
In my opinion, I think the audiences have benefited the most from the development of new and digital media that has had an impact on the news industry. 

This is due to the fact that the consumers can consume news and stories quickly as the news nowadays are reported so fast; its instantaneous. 

The consumers don't need to pay for any subscriptions even though some websites might require, they can always consume the news from other free news websites. 

Now, they can consume news through social media too which is more interactive.
