NDM: What's wrong with the internet?

1) Summarise the article in 50 words.
This article covers the lack of privacy on the internet for people through companies and the government using "date mining" to access data's and information's of other people. They access information's for advertising purposes which they sell to advertising companies which would help them make profit. Essentially, on the first page of the article, they clarify the story of the schools in America using webcams to spy on pupils which conveys the lack of privacy on the internet in the modern world.

2) Are you worried about companies tracking your online movement?
Well, I tend to be very socially active on social media platforms especially such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Snapchat. Due to this, I would be quite worried because I do have many messages, pictures, videos and etc which is very personal to me. I would want some privacy instead of companies accessing my information's.

3) Are the problems with the internet (such as concerns over data and privacy) a price worth paying for all the benefits we gain from life online?
In my perspective, yes because through paying such little amounts which I do quite do but some people do tend to pay more for things on the internet, it certainly takes away the worry that we have for "data and privacy". We tend to rely on the internet and what we consume to get through the week for entertainment purposes mainly.

4) Should governments be able to spy on our activity online? Where would you draw the line - social media? Private messaging conversations? Our phone photos and contacts?
Well, in my perspective, I do think governments should be able to spy on our activity online because through seeing what many young people go on, on the internet, it is essentially for our safety and for us to be protected against many negative things that might influence us. But however, with social media platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram, it is vital that the governments shouldn't check regularly on these platforms because I and everyone tend to have personal photos, videos and messages on it which we wouldn't like anyone to access.

5) Read this Guardian news story from last week on Harvard withdrawing offers due to offensive memes on Facebook. In your opinion, were Harvard right to rescind those offers?
Within the story on Guardian, it is debatable because I think Harvard were both right and wrong. Firstly, I think they were right because the jokes about the issues in the modern society that is so serious does have a big impact because it shows the lack of emotions that the students who wished to attend Harvard University had. However, I do believe that the university are also wrong because young students always tend to "joke" about certain serious things but it is clear that they don't actually mean what they say and also, it isn't right for not accepting students who want to represent Harvard University with pride.
